Arrive in Ahmedabad Welcome to Gujarat! As soon as you land in Ahmedabad, we'll be there to greet you with a warm smile. We'll whisk you away to your comfortable hotel where you can freshen up and relax after your journey. In the evening, we'll take a short trip to Sabarmati Ashram. This peaceful retreat was once home to Mahatma Gandhi, and you can feel the history in the air. We'll wander through the simple rooms where Gandhi lived and worked, and you can even try your hand at spinning cotton on a traditional charkha! To cap off your first day, we'll treat you to a mouthwatering welcome dinner. Get ready to tantalise your taste buds with authentic Gujarati dishes. From crispy fafda to sweet and spicy undhiyu, it's a feast you won't forget!
Ahmedabad Rise and shine! Today, we're diving headfirst into Ahmedabad's rich history. Did you know it's a UNESCO World Heritage City? That's right, and we're going to show you why! First stop: Sidi Saiyyed Mosque. Look up at the incredible stone lattice windows – they're so intricate, it's hard to believe they were carved by hand! Next, we'll head to Adalaj Stepwell. As we descend the stairs, imagine the locals centuries ago coming here to collect water and escape the heat. In the afternoon, we'll explore Sarkhej Roza, a peaceful architectural complex that's often called 'Ahmedabad's Acropolis'. The blend of Hindu and Islamic styles will leave you in awe. As the sun sets, get ready for a real treat – a heritage walk through the old city. We'll wander through narrow lanes, peek into hidden havelis, and maybe even spot a pol house or two. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous bird feeders, known as chabutras!
Ahmedabad to Patan (150 km) Pack your bags, we're hitting the road! Our first stop is Patan, home to the incredible Rani ki Vav. This stepwell is so spectacular it's earned a spot on the UNESCO World Heritage list. As we descend the stairs, look out for the intricate carvings – there are over 500 principal sculptures! Next up, we'll visit a Patola weaving centre. These double ikat saris are world-famous, and you'll get to see the masters at work. It's mind-boggling to think each sari can take up to six months to make! In the afternoon, we'll drive to Modhera (about 35 km) to visit the Sun Temple. As the afternoon light hits the carved walls, you'll understand why this is one of Gujarat's most impressive monuments. Don't forget to check out the massive step tank – it's like a geometric puzzle!
Patan to Little Rann of Kutch (130 km) Today, we're heading into the wild! Our destination is the Little Rann of Kutch, a unique landscape that's part desert, part wetland. After lunch at our desert camp, we'll hop into jeeps for an exciting safari. Keep your eyes peeled for the Indian wild ass – this is the only place in India where you can spot these majestic creatures. If we're lucky, we might even see some flamingos wading in the shallow waters. As the sun sets over the vast expanse, you'll feel like you're on another planet. Tonight, we'll sleep under the stars in our comfortable desert camp. Listen to the sounds of the wilderness and marvel at the blanket of stars above – it's a night you won't forget!
Little Rann of Kutch to Bhuj (250 km) After breakfast, we're off to Bhuj, the heart of Kutch. On arrival, we'll visit Aina Mahal, a stunning 18th-century palace. The Hall of Mirrors is a real showstopper – see if you can spot yourself in the thousands of mirror fragments! Next door is Prag Mahal, a grand Italian Gothic-style palace. Climb to the top of the bell tower for panoramic views of Bhuj. We'll round off the day with a stroll through the local markets. From colourful textiles to intricate silver jewellery, there's plenty to feast your eyes on – and maybe pick up a souvenir or two!
Bhuj and surroundings Get ready for a day of cultural immersion! We're heading to the Banni villages, home to some of Gujarat's most skilled artisans. Watch in awe as women create intricate embroidery, their fingers moving faster than you can follow. In another village, we'll see the art of block printing in action – you might even get to try your hand at it! If we're visiting during the right season, we'll make a trip to the White Desert of Kutch. This vast salt marsh transforms into a shimmering white expanse after the monsoons – it's like walking on the moon!
Bhuj to Mandvi (60 km) Today we're heading to the coast! In Mandvi, our first stop is the Vijay Vilas Palace. This summer retreat of the Kutch royal family might look familiar – it's been featured in several Bollywood films! Next, we'll visit the shipbuilding yard. It's fascinating to watch skilled craftsmen building massive wooden ships using techniques passed down through generations. The afternoon is yours to relax on Mandvi Beach. Feel the sand between your toes, take a dip in the Arabian Sea, or simply soak up the sun. If you're feeling adventurous, why not try a camel ride along the shore?
Mandvi to Gondal (280 km) We've got a longer drive today, but don't worry – the destination is worth it! Gondal is a former princely state with a rich history. On arrival, we'll tour the Naulakha Palace. This 18th-century building is a treasure trove of art and artefacts. The real treat is the vintage car collection. From classic Cadillacs to regal Rolls-Royces, it's a petrolhead's dream come true!
Day 9: Gondal to Gir National Park (160 km) Lions in India? You better believe it! Today we're heading to Gir National Park, the last home of the Asiatic lion. After lunch, we'll set out on our first safari. Keep your cameras ready – besides lions, you might spot leopards, sambar deer, and a variety of birds. As night falls, listen to the sounds of the jungle from the comfort of your lodge. Who knows, you might even hear a lion's roar in the distance!
Gir National Park Rise and shine, it's safari time! We'll head out early to catch the wildlife at their most active. After lunch and a rest, we'll go out again for an afternoon safari. Two safaris double your chances of spotting the king of the jungle! In between safaris, we'll make a trip to Somnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. The temple's towering spire and intricate carvings are a sight to behold.
Gir to Palitana (180 km) Today's destination is Palitana, home to one of the most spectacular temple complexes in India. If you're up for a challenge, we'll climb Shatrunjaya Hill to visit the Jain temples at the top. It's 3,500 steps to the summit, but the view (and the temples) are worth every step! Don't worry if the climb seems daunting – there's plenty to explore at the base too. We can arrange for you to be carried up in a doli (sedan chair) if you prefer.
Palitana to Vadodara (300 km) We've got a long drive ahead, but we'll break it up with plenty of stops along the way. Our destination is Vadodara, once the capital of the Gaekwad dynasty. In the evening, we'll visit Laxmi Vilas Palace, four times the size of Buckingham Palace! The audio tour will give you insights into the lavish lifestyle of the maharajas who once called this place home.
Vadodara - Champaner - Ahmedabad (150 km) Our last full day is packed with UNESCO World Heritage sites! First up is Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park. We'll explore the well-preserved Jami Masjid, climb to the hilltop fortress (by cable car if you prefer), and wander through the ruins of this ancient capital. In the afternoon, we'll make our way back to where it all began – Ahmedabad. Take some time to do any last-minute shopping or revisit your favourite spots from the first days of our journey.
Depart from Ahmedabad All good things must come to an end, but the memories of your Gujarat adventure will last a lifetime! Depending on your flight time, you might have a chance for some last-minute shopping. Then it's off to the airport, where we'll bid you a fond farewell. Safe travels, and we hope to see you in Gujarat again soon!
