Hey there, traveller! Welcome to India! We'll kick off our adventure with a flight from Delhi to Leh. As we soar over the Himalayas, keep your eyes peeled for stunning mountain views. Once we land in Leh, we'll take it easy for the rest of the day. Why? Well, Leh sits at a whopping 3,500 metres above sea level, and your body needs time to adjust to the altitude. So, we'll check into our cosy hotel, have a light lunch, and spend the afternoon relaxing. Maybe enjoy a cuppa on the terrace while soaking in the mountain views? On day two, we'll continue to take it slow, with a gentle walk around Leh's old town. We'll pop into the central market, where you can browse colourful prayer flags and traditional Ladakhi handicrafts. Remember, drink plenty of water and listen to your body – altitude sickness is no joke!
Rise and shine! It's time to dive into Ladakh's rich Buddhist heritage. We'll start with a visit to Thiksey Monastery, often called the "Mini Potala" because it looks a bit like the famous palace in Tibet. If you're an early bird, we can catch the morning prayers – trust me, the sound of chanting monks at sunrise is something special. Next up is Shey Palace, the former summer retreat of Ladakhi royalty. Don't miss the giant copper and gold statue of Buddha inside! On day four, we're off to Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest in Ladakh. If you're lucky, we might catch a glimpse of the famous mask dance rehearsals. In the afternoon, we'll explore Stok Palace Museum, where you can see royal artefacts and even try on traditional Ladakhi royal costumes for a fun photo op!
Pack your bags, we're hitting the road! Our first stop is Alchi Monastery, one of the oldest Buddhist learning centres in Ladakh. The murals here are over 1,000 years old and absolutely stunning. See if you can spot the "three-headed" Bodhisattva – it's a real mind-bender! On day six, we're off to Lamayuru, home to what locals call "Moonland". As we approach, you'll see why – the landscape looks like something straight out of a sci-fi film! We'll explore the ancient Lamayuru Monastery, perched dramatically on a steep cliff. Fancy a bit of a hike? We can trek up to a viewpoint for some out-of-this-world photos of the "lunar" landscape.
Today we're crossing one of the highest motorable passes in the world – Khardung La, at 5,359 metres! Once we descend into Nubra Valley, you'll feel like you've entered another world. We'll visit Diskit Monastery, home to a massive 32-metre statue of Maitreya Buddha. Then, hold onto your hats – we're going for a bumpy ride on a double-humped Bactrian camel across the sand dunes! On day eight, we'll head to the charming village of Turtuk, right on the India-Pakistan border. Here, you'll stay with a local family in a traditional Ladakhi home. Help your host prepare dinner, learn a few words of Ladakhi, and fall asleep under a sky full of stars. It's a chance to really experience local life – and I bet you'll make some lifelong friends!
Rise and shine early, because today's the day we visit the famous Pangong Lake! This massive lake changes colour throughout the day – from deep blue to turquoise to even a hint of pink. We'll have a picnic lunch by the shore (keep an eye out for marmots and maybe even a Tibetan wild ass!). In the evening, we'll stay in cosy tents right by the lake. If you're feeling brave, how about a quick dip in the chilly water?
Wildlife enthusiasts, this one's for you! We're spending the day in Hemis National Park, home to the elusive snow leopard. While these big cats are rarely seen in summer, we'll keep our eyes peeled for Tibetan wolves, blue sheep, and golden eagles. We'll take a gentle nature walk with a local guide who'll point out medicinal plants used in traditional Ladakhi medicine. Tonight, we'll camp under the stars – perfect for some world-class stargazing!
Back in Leh, it's time for some shopping! We'll wander through the bustling bazaar where you can pick up souvenirs like prayer wheels, thangka paintings, and pashmina shawls. Fancy a cuppa? Let's stop at a local tea house for some butter tea – it's an acquired taste, but when in Ladakh, right? In the afternoon, we're in for a treat – a cooking class with a local chef! You'll learn to make momos (Ladakhi dumplings) and maybe even try your hand at making butter tea. It's a fun, hands-on way to take a bit of Ladakh home with you.
Well, my friend, our Ladakhi adventure has come to an end. As we fly back to Delhi, take a last look at those magnificent Himalayan peaks. I bet you're leaving with a camera full of photos, a bag full of souvenirs, and a heart full of memories. Safe travels, and don't forget to share your Ladakh stories with everyone back home!
